Nancy Medina, a self-taught pastry chef and co-owner of Providence Bake House with husband Edwin Medina, bring a unique blend of pastries and desserts to the heart of Uptown Whittier. With a background in art and illustration, Nancy's unique perspective brings a dash of creativity into every dessert. Having grown up in a family with many gifted women for the culinary world she has always gravitated to being creative in the kitchen and pastries were one way she has excelled.
Prior to 2020 Nancy assisted her husband managing a cafe for a large church in the South Bay where she was able to develop many of her recipes.
When the pandemic hit, she started baking various treats for her brother's workplace. It didn't take long for her husband to come up with a brilliant idea of sharing her pastries on Facebook, and before they knew it, orders started pouring in. The influx of orders became overwhelming, prompting her husband to lend a helping hand in the kitchen. As the pandemic situation persisted, they continued baking from the comfort of their home and unexpectedly found themselves participating in pop-up events.
As their popularity grew, they soon realized that their humble home kitchen could no longer keep up with the demand. They made a bold decision to fully commit to their growing business and moved their production to Crafted Kitchen in Los Angeles. This move allowed them to expand their reach by participating in local farmers' markets, specifically the Friday Morning Farmers Market and the Wednesday Night Market in Uptown Whittier. It was through these markets that they met one of their loyal customers, who happened to be the owner of Whittier Brewing Company.
Coincidentally, the Whittier Brewing Company was actively seeking a pastry and dessert company to collaborate with, and in September 2022, the couple happily moved their operations into the brewery. This new partnership not only provided them with a dedicated space to create their delicious pastries but also allowed them to showcase their products to a wider audience. The journey from home baking to joining forces with a local brewery was a testament to their unwavering passion and commitment to their craft.
